13. European Pressure Equipment Conference

European pressure vessel standards on the advance

Prof. Peter Langenberg was invited by TÜV Süd to give a lecture on the toughness requirements for pressure vessels and current developments in the EN 13445-2 standard. In a lecture block, the comparisons with the ASME standard were particularly emphasized. The ASME norm is the most frequently used standard worldwide for the design and manufacture of pressure vessels, but it does not conform to the European Pressure Equipment Directive. Comparisons, advantages and disadvantages, testing costs and economic efficiency for both standards were lively discussed in the specialist audience.

In his lecture, Peter Langenberg makes it clear to the predominantly German-speaking audience that the interpretation of the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68 / EU in conjunction with the EN 13445 set of rules does not mean a restriction, but rather freedom to innovate.

Using the example of Part 2, Appendix B of the standard, he explains that the selection methods for selecting steel grades, in particular methods 2 and 3, offer great potential for optimization compared to regulations such as AD 2000 or ASME.

Together with the attending representatives of the production and testing committees, Dr. Frank Wohnsland from VDMA and Andreas Kittel from Linde AG are encouraged to give more support to standardization work at European level. Right now there are some problems with funding such an important task. The DIN secretariat cannot be held for much longer.
