Core method
The usual procedure to date and described in guidelines for determining the material properties of steel from existing buildings is to take drill cores.
Miniature samples for materials testing are made from drill cores that are as small as possible. Depending on the required property profile to be determined, tensile samples, fracture mechanics and impact bending samples can be taken and information about the structure, chemical composition and weldability of the steels can also be derived.
Since the guarantee of resistance to brittle fracture in particular for steels manufactured before around 1980 can no longer be reliably determined using the notched-bar impact test in conjunction with the Eurocode (EN 1993-1-10), fracture mechanics tests are recommended for structures built before 1980 .
The removal of the drill cores must be planned with the structural engineer with regard to the safety of the structure.
