Check old steel for weldability

Suitability for welding old steels

Old steel is not always suitable for welding, as we know from modern structural steel.

However, depending on the type and time of manufacture as well as the individual properties of the component, complete or limited weldability can be determined. For this process, individual testing of the material is essential. The drill core method but also the OES method in conjunction with the drill core method are suitable tests.

The aim is to record the chemical composition, steel type and structure in the cross section of the component and, based on this, to formulate an assessment of the weldability. The weldability of old steel can be ensured under consideration of the type of steel present, the construction details and the execution of the welding in compliance with various conditions.
